Taiwan-based company Readmoo is set to create a new wave in the e-reader market with its latest product, the mooInk V. The world’s first consumer-ready e-reader to use a foldable E Ink display, the MooInk V is gaining attention with its design that mimics the experience of traditional paper books.

Book-like design

The MooInk V features an 8-inch E Ink Gallery 3 display that folds down to a pocket-sized size through foldable technology. When closed, the device looks smaller than a typical smartphone and offers readers both portability and the true feel of a book. The display can display over 50,000 colors at a resolution of 300 ppi, making it ideal for comics and picture books.

Advanced technology

The MooInk V was developed after nine years of research in collaboration with E Ink. The display, which can be folded 200,000 times, uses optimized stacking technology and new materials. The device weighs only 255 grams and has an aluminum-magnesium alloy body, making it lightweight and durable.

Book-like reading experience

The MooInk V can be used fully open, 180 degrees, or partially folded 90 degrees, allowing it to be held like a traditional book. However, the possibility of pinching when holding it at the hinge remains a concern, and this is a challenge that needs to be addressed in the future design.

Prospects for the e-reader market

The MooInk V, which runs on the Android operating system, supports various reading apps such as Kindle and Kobo, which gives users flexibility. However, information on US availability, price, and release date is not yet available. Although it is available for pre-order in Taiwan for around $615, its expansion to the global market is still unclear.

Future prospects

Even if the MooInk V is not available in the US, this foldable design has the potential to create a new trend in the e-reader market. If brands such as Kobo, Amazon, and Onyx Books try this design, E Ink tablets will become more similar to paper notebooks. This device, which makes reading and digital note-taking more natural, will be a dream come true for reading enthusiasts.
